Things to Know Before Getting a Sphynx Cat

The Sphynx is one of the most distinctive cat breeds in the world — affectionate, people-oriented, and famously hairless. But before bringing one home, it’s important to know what daily life with a Sphynx actually requires.

1. High-Maintenance Grooming

Despite having no fur, Sphynx cats are not low-maintenance. Their skin produces natural oils that would normally be absorbed by fur, so they require:

  • Weekly baths
  • Regular ear cleaning
  • Frequent nail wiping (oil collects around cuticles)

2. Temperature Sensitivity

Sphynx cats can become cold easily. Homes should offer:

  • Warm blankets
  • Heated beds
  • Avoidance of direct drafts

3. Skin Health Considerations

They are prone to:

  • Acne
  • Yeast overgrowth
  • Sunburn (for outdoor/ window-sunbathing cats)

Unscented, cat-safe products work best, and sunscreen should never contain zinc oxide.

4. Personality & Social Needs

Sphynx cats want near-constant companionship. They thrive in homes with:

  • Someone home often
  • Another friendly cat
  • Lots of interactive play

If you love a clingy, social cat, you’ll adore a Sphynx!
